Mitigation

The Missouri River Mitigation Project is an effort to create new wildlife habitat and restore existing wildlife areas along 735 miles of the Missouri River between Sioux City, Iowa, and the mouth of the river, north of St. Louis, Mo. Where possible, the Missouri River will be returned to a condition that more resembles its original state, before the beginning of channelization and other man-made modifications.

This web site will offer news, information and resources on the Mitigation Project and on more than 50 mitigation sites in the project area - stay tuned.

If you are interested in selling land to the Corps of Engineers for this program, see our Land Acquisition FAQs page for basic information. You are welcome to contact us at any time with your questions or comments.
Environmental Impact A Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) was completed prior to project implementation on the additional acres.

Issue
The Missouri River Mitigation Project is an effort to mitigate, or compensate for losses of fish and wildlife habitat that are the result of past channelization efforts on the Missouri River. The Missouri River Mitigation Project extends from Sioux City, Iowa to the mouth of the Missouri River near St. Louis, a length of 735 river miles. The project will develop approximately 166,750 acres of land in separate locations along the river in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri.
Goal
The purpose of this mitigation effort is to acquire land and develop aquatic and terrestrial habitat on individual sites found along the length of the project area. New wildlife areas will be created, existing areas will be improved, and where possible, the river and its features will be restored to more resemble the river's original historic condition. The project will develop approximately 166,750 acres of land in separate locations along the river in Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas and Missouri.

Preservation or restoration will be accomplished by means of land acquisition from willing sellers, dredging filled-in areas, reopening historic chutes, bank stabilization, dike notching, pumping, dike/levee construction, vegetative plantings, and vegetation and land management.

To construct this mitigation project the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is working with a coordination team, comprised of State and Federal fish and wildlife agencies, In addition, the Corps also works with interested State and local groups on a site-by-site basis for successful project implementation.
